Default Why is it always one screw LOL

I was swapping out the wheel bearings on my truck. Big rims and huge negative offsets don't play nice with wheel bearings. But not a big deal, between this truck and my last truck I've probably changed 5 of them.

We does GM insist on using this damn torx head screw to hold the brake disc to the hub. After breaking one torx bit in half, twisting another around and bearing and easy out into the head of the screw I got it out.

Then after getting it all apart I open the box for my new hub only to find they sent me a hub for a 2wd truck when mine is 4wd!!!!!! Well since my truck was hanging half in half out of the garage, because I thought "this would only be an 1-1/2 hour job". I had to put every thing back to gather with the old hub just so I could move the truck out of the garage so we could shut the door. So now I get to do that side twice. Atleast all the bolts are broken loose now LOL

Love changing out wheel hubs.. perks of having lowered AWD trucks.

Get yourself a impact driver, that's the only thing I use for taking those off.

LOL I used one on every other bolt I took off. I just thought the impact would destroy that little torx bit.

An impact will make quick work of it or break the bit. I had a problem with the brake caliper bolts being frozen on an 04 Yukon I had. My Milwaukee 1/2" puts out 1200 ft lbs breakaway and it broke off 3 torx head impact sockets... Needless to say I bought a new caliper and just took the 2 hex head bolts out of the spindle removing the caliper, bracket and pads all as one. Normally though it will break stuff loose. Never damaged the heads of the fastners though!

Hit the rotor all around that bolt with a hammer before trying to remove it. Those bolts get rusted solid and hitting with a hammer helps break up the rust and makes them break free easier.

A typical impact gun is way too big for the little bits used to pull rotor bolts. My electric 1/4" impact works great for them since it isn't strong enough to break the bit but also only gets the bolt out about half the time. The impact driver mentioned is the go to tool for pulling those rotor bolts, but it is borderline too much for the bits for the small bolts that hold rotors on, most of the time it works perfect, every once in a while it will break a bit. Not sure if you are thinking of the same thing though, an impact driver looks like a screw driver and you hit it with a hammer.

Next time that bolt goes to **** on you just grab a big drill bit and drill the head of the bolt right off. Funk drilling it and using an ease out. The bolt isn't usable either way after all that so just drill the whole head off in seconds. And if you want to run without that bolt in there it's no problem at all. It's just there for convenience and holding the rotor up while the wheel is off. Tons of vehicles don't even have bolts to hold the rotor. Get rid of that bolt if you hate it.

On one of my previous Hub jobs I messed up that same bolt. I just threw it in the trash and never had a problem. So once I get the correct Hub in next week I'll do the same with this one.

So that bolt is actually just used on the assembly line, to keep the rotor from falling off and smoking a worker when the vehicle is overhead

+1 to the impact driver, perfect tool for the job. Along with some kroil/PB Blaster/ fav penetrating oil

+1 to leaving it off too, unless you plan to swing your truck 10' above your head with no wheels installed

I assumed it was assembly line stuff originally when they had the stupid press on washer things. Then when they went to bolts I though maybe they put them there to keep the rotor in place for all scenarios.

Some manufacturers use 2 bolts so that also made me think they are there for more than assembly line.

Either way they work best when thrown in the trash
