Basically in so many words, don't bother with the 4.8. There are guys with great results running turbo's on the 4.8's but that's a ton of work tuning it.
The cheapest way is just do an engine swap. Sounds like a lot of work, but it's a 1 day affair.
You can do a 6.0 swap for under $1500 if you look around. All the accessories will swap over as well and everything will bolt up without needing adapters.

I have the same setup, except I bought it new in 2003. I agree with most posters here. If you don't want to go FI, then a 6.0L would be the best choice. I went the Radix route and am pleased with it, but if my truck were to disappear, I would give serious thought to going the 6.0L route for its replacement. The only fly in the ointment could be: Although you say you are currently in Hawaii and are from Tennessee, I can't help noticing the "California" in your name. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe CA disallows the installation of engines larger than what was available from the factory for that particular year, make and model. Apparently they do not currently check but they may some day in the future. However, you can get Radix, Whipple and I think STS setups that are officially CARB approved. Again it may not be a problem, just something to think about.

If ya want a lil more squeeze from it do a cam tr220 or 224, full exhaust, 2600-3k stall, custom tuning, 410,s shift kit, intake, pulley's, if ya feel good do a set of heads or have yours worked. Or just say screw all that bs, get a 6.0 and be just as fast with the stock 6.0 as a built 4.8. Thats what i did. Also save up for for a tranny cause it will leave with a beefed 4.8 or the 6.0.
