5.3 to a 383?
Bore 3.905, 4.000 stroke, and you could clame fastest stock block. Anyone thought of this? I guess it would be more cost effective to go 408. Just a thought.
PS: this is an at work bordem post before Labor day weekend

Would it be cost effective to go with a 6.0 block? If you already have the 5.3 block and are willing to deal with the downtime then I would think it might be cheaper to bore the 5.3. No matter which way you go your machinest is going to spend time on each cylinder. I guess it can depend on how much you'll be charged to bore the 5.3 versus purchasing, say, a used 6.0 block that is known to be a good core that only requires a cleanup hone. For a 408 you would need to bore a 6.0 block 0.030 over. If the cylinders are in great shape... then a hone cleanup for a 402. And does it stop with the short block? You could also easily blow your "cost effectiveness" out of the water with matching heads that will allow a bigger cubed motor to breathe efficiantly. It is a slippery slope... no doubt

A 3.905 bore in a 5.3 is well beyond the suggested factory overbore. If you are going to pop for a stroker crank assembly why would you chance building a motor with to thin cylinder walls.Build it right the first time, building it a second time really stinks.

It was a thought. I just wondered if it could be done. I know people on here have said that a 5.3 can be bored out to a 346. I guess they mean stock bore, which is really a 3.898. Now the question is should it be pushed to that limit? I guess a 6.0 block could hold up to a lot more abuse.

Its a valid thought for those who are serious... and have a seriously limited budget wanting max cubes for as little money as possible give what they ALREADY have. 5.3 iron blocks have been bored to 3.905. Have you heard of people busting 5.3 blocks after boring that big? Ask around. Read Will Handzel's book... W2W says its no problem.

this is something that i had in mind for my 4.8L. Im looking for a low budget upgrade from my existing block. I was told the boring it to the 346 with the iron block shouldnt be no big deal and will hold up. Now my question is in this build would you want a new stock piston or go with something forged? Also add to the picture heads, intake and cam... I think that anyone with a 4.8 or a 5.3 could build one nice 383 out of one, at least that is my winter plans.
Someone should to a sticky about combo's i think-one for all n/a motors and one for FI motors..
