I have an iron 347 (bored 5.3 block) in my '92
I am going turbo, so it has forged pistons with a little dish along with good rods. Plan on pushing the motor a good bit; 15-18psi eventually.
Only reason I went this way was I stumbled across a great deal. Otherwise, I would do the iron block 6.0.

you can find them for less than half the price of 6.0's
btw i just aquired a 5.3 longblock for free!

Wow, this thread just took off! I was just wondering if anyone was thinking outside of the box. I guess the 408 is so mainstream nowdays. Not that it does not make good power, but everyone has one (except me ). Good to know that people are thinking about different ideas.

TTT good topic. I was bored/wondering about strokeing/boring the 5.3 also, since they have the same stroke & rod length as an LS1/6 anyways. Also in my boredom I was thinking how 6.0 heads on a 5.3 would run with a 4" crank, and if it would even out the compression somewhat since the 6.0's have larger combustion chambers, if not running shorter rods or different pistons. There has to be some kind of cost effective formula to run a decent built 5.3l N/A. I think it's under researched, everyone either goes F.i. on the 5.3 or goes to the 6.0 F.I. and or 408. Not that it's a bad idea, but if you already have a 5.3....I was bored at work what can I say.

I came up with $5000 part list to build the 383. This is using some of the best parts avaliable. Then, there is the cost of prepping the block, balancing and assembly. By the time it is over I would have a $8000 motor with the h/c I already have.
