Ok I am rebuilding a 03 5.3 ( or refreshing it)
new rings bearing (rods and mains)
I am using moly rings and was told to hone or deglaze cylinder with 400 grit only but according to the mitchell1 ondemand5 240 grit is the only grit to use can some one clear this up for me please....
also was size and type of hone did you guys uses the dingo berry type hone I can only fine in 3.75 but i thing the bore on this motor is 3.77???(not sure) the next size is 4inch can I get away with the 3.75
Next my crank is fine all of the bearings were also fine... My question is do I have to have my crank polished can I just install the new bearings......
only reason I am doing any of this is the motor was sitting for a while a water set on top of the pistons
Also can you reuse the small bolts that go in the side of the block for the main caps???...

I would think that if water was in the cylinders there will be more to clean up than you can do with a dingle berry hone in a drill. Your best bet is probably to take it to a machine shop like stated above. They usually dont charge too much to go through the block and hone the cylinders. Would be a little more if they have to bore any. Its worth it though so you know for sure your rings will get a good seal.

Well I would but this is a project motor and the fun for me is in doing it all myself with in reason I have a 6.0 that's get the full machine shop treatment this motor is just to see what works tuning wise and so forth

In my area it cost $180 to have block vatted, cylinders honed, and cam bearings installed. Well worth it! You leave lots of power potential on the table by not deglazing the cylinder walls.

Here to just give the block a bath cost 250.... I really have no issue with the price.... My plan has always been to deglaze the cylinders for new rings.... My question is what type and size hone has been used by others on this site to deglaze a stock bore 5.3
