8.1L cam selection
Did some searching and found two companys that do cams. If you know of other let me know.
This will be going in a stock motor suburban. I have intake exhaust, and will have stainless works long tubues if they ever answer the damn phone.
I plan on doing heads at some point and i might do a 72-76 mm turbo later that i have left over from one of the supras.
As for now, Im just looking for a cam that will work best with what i have. I dont tow a lot but when i do its about 8K pounds.
I know performance gains will not be huge with a cam, I just want something that sound a lot better at idel.. The truck has 496ci and sounds like a freaking honda.
raler engenering has 3 cams listed. But thye give no specs actully they have two because one said you have to use aftermarket pistons.
The other company is Crane, this is what they have listed.
206 / 212 .510 .510 @ 112
212 / 212 / .510 .510 @ 114
218 / 224 .510 .510 @ 114
anyother suggestion is fine with me.
Also how hard is a cam swap on a 8.1L the hole motor have to come out?

The Crane 206/212 would give you more low end umph, and the split along with 112 LSA will give you a good idle. I remember reading somewhere about people swapping cams on this and the 7.4l vortec and it not being so bad.

I saw all those cams before on Summit's site and wondered why all the cams stop at .510" of lift? What limits the lift in the big blocks like that because I know somewhere you can get higher lift springs. What are all the big block 1/4 mile guys using who stuff aluminum 572's into their little 3000lb 1/4 mile terrors?
At any rate, if you don't get the .510" max lift thing ironed out, the 212/218 CompCAMS shaft seems to be the best all around cam but I'd like to see the stock camshaft specs first before making a final suggestion. Do you have/know the stock cam specs for the 8.1? That would help the decision making process go a lot smoother.
The unofficial suggestion:

Cams you have listed are Comps. Crane has cams too but they are much bigger lift cams. The problem I see is they could be too much lift for a stock 8.1l. I ran comps 218 / 224 with 1.8 rockers making lift .540 with no problems. Springs will be must too.
It's not a hard swap. Mine was the first big block I've done a cam swap on. I started at noon and was finish in time to cruising that night. You will have to remove the radiator and grill.

So tierod sense you have done this, what do you think about just doing the heads with 1.8 rockers, springs and exhaust valves.. then a different cam from crane? That intake manifold they have looks good. Not sure what it cost of if its worth the money....
