243's w/ a good valve job & a 90mm TBSS intake manifold will work nice. The key will be setting up your valve train properly. Do that & you'll make good power every where.

That was my next question. Should I go with the older cathedral port 243s or the newer oval port 243s (799s) like on the new 5.3s?

If it's not that big of a difference I'm not sure I'd like to spend the money on swapping intakes.

Hollow stem intake valves/sodium filled exhaust.
Yellow springs too.

To be honest it aint worth the swap unless u also port/polish the 243's...
best thing to do is save a little more for a 6.0 swap, since u can find some decent low mileags for $1200-1400

I would do the 862's. They will cost a bit more and give you better results. Milling the 243's will get you down to about stock compression. Milling the 862's can get you to 10:1 or higher and they flow very well ported. Compression is one thing the 5.3L really needs. We did a 5.7L a while back with ported 5.3L heads and made 451RWHP. We took 243's off to put them on.

Go with the 243s fully ported and milled, thats what the Blue angel running if not mistaken and hauls ***, that cam you have will love the extra flow from the ported heads.

What is your deal with TSP? Have you ever run their heads?
