My Tahoe has a TR224 running a higher compression 6.0L and a stock converter. I plan to put a higher stall in it, but even with the stock converter it comes out just fine. Not lazy at all. My 5.3L has a cam with very similar spec's and a converter that flash stalls to about 2500rpm. It could really use more stall, but it is on the edge of being enough in good air. In good air it should pull a 1.9 60', but in bad air it'll only pull a 2.1 60' to give you an example. I'd recomend a 3000 stall with that cam.

It will be about that long for me to get mine tuned as well after my cam install...

I read somewhere on here that a guy ran his truck with a cam without a tune

A lot of people do. It's not that bad if you can two foot it until the computer learns how to somewhat manage it.

Basically more worried about the choppy idle dying on you than hurting anything (valvetrain)?

Pretty much. It's not really bad for the motor, it just isn't running as efficiently as it should. That and it can be a real bitch to drive, but don't take that as you can beat on your truck every day for months without a tune, because you could break something that way.
