Answering your "which cam" question
I'm in the middle of finding the best cam for my rig. I've been reading, reading, and reading some more. I saw what others with 6.0's are doing and how they chose their cam. I kept seeing the same recommendations(TR224, "trucker" and such) for most 6.0's. I thought, "but is this the best for me and how will I know once it's in my truck?" I saw other people recommending cam masters like Pat G and Ed Curtis. Again, I though "do I really need to go all custom cam?" I was actually getting further away from making a choice the more I read.
Then I found this gem; Camshaft Discussion I, II, and III.
Although my head almost exploded, I'm really glad I went through it. These old threads showed me just how complicated the little "which camshaft" question is. I gained tons of knowledge in a short amount of time.
My summation of the beast is quite simple. You need exact VEs corresponding to your specific engine combination. Looking at .050 duration and LSA is not going to get you there. You may find a GOOD cam for your rig just looking at those, but probably not the BEST.
While I gained info. on cam's, I felt there is just too much for me to learn. Why guess, why hope, and why leave doubt afterwards. I will GLADLY pay a cam master to match the VEs to my engine setup. This is really the point of my post. If you don't know what a cam REALLY does, why not ask a pro? Let them answer the magical "which cam" question. It may or may not be custom, but they will KNOW what's needed. Like everything else, if you're going to do it, do it right.
