After looking up some part numbers, it appears there are two different types of gaskets made...how would I tell what type I have before teardown? Thanks

Also how would I tell what size head bolts I need?

As for the size of the head bolts, there was a break in the years, where they went from long and short bolts, to all long bolts, or something like that. Jon @ Texas Speed was very helpful to me in that respect when I did my swap.

The gaskets??? Can you post some links to the two that you have found, so we can look at them?

mine never overheated when it blew on the interstate at 1/4 throttle and warpped 4 thousandths. it is very possible. if you are ready to pay $1700 then just buy some new heads not worry about machining and go for it

General rule of thumb is... ( there is always an exception to every rule so consider it a basic guide to go by. When in doubt pull your old part before you make the purchase and seek proffisional help matching up the old part )

Look around the edges of the head surface for the gasket material you should be able to tell what you have by scratching at it.
Its either a fiber materail or a metal gasket.

99-02 was a graphite/fiberstyle gasket - #12457116 -4.8L/5.3L GM Graphite Gasket

03-up is a MLS head gasket - #12575329 -4.8L/5.3L GM MLS Head Gasket

#89017252 - 5.3L/4.8L Complete Head gasket kit containg all gaskets need to R and R the heads.

99-03 head bolts long and short - #12498545

04-up was the change to all same size - #17800568

Does the long and short bolts apply to the LQ9 6.0 also? (I believe it does but I want to be sure )

An LQ9 is No different

The only thing that makes an Lq9 any different is that it has flat top pistons instead of the dish ones found in the Lq4. After 05 the all got the same rods...

Intresting I have a 5.3 that I pulled from an 01 or 02 Tahoe that had MLS gaskets.... Well, I guess you will have to pull the head and see...

AT the corner of the head were it's rounded, some of the material hangs out. Scratch at it and see what you have...
