Bore a 5.3L block out to 5.7L?
Anyone take their 4.8/5.3 block (3.779) and bore it out to (3.893) 5.7L? Would this be a worthy mod or would it be better to punch it out to (4.000) a 6.0L? With a 3.893 bore, you take advantage of using LS6 pistons and can make an LS6 out of it w/ the exception of having a cast iron block. With a 4.000 bore, you can use the LQ9 pistons.
Basically, I'm picking up a 4.8L and want to bore it out, but don't want to make it a 408. The easiest thing to do would be to change the pistons and crank and make it a 5.3L. But, a cast iron 5.7L LS6 sounds tempting.

BlownChevy's correct. Several years ago we bored a 5.3l block to 3.90". We sonic tested the block first. There was enough to make the 3.90" bore, but not enough to make the 4.0" bore. That engine ran really well in a 4X Tahoe w/a lift kit.
Good luck,
Richard

Thanks for the info guys! I didn't think you could bore it out much more than 3.893". I think I'll go that route, LS6 pistons and so on should be something I can get off the shelf.

you can buy a new 6.0 block for 600.00 "NEW"

Well, I picked up the 4.8 and got to say it was a hell of a deal. I'm not sure which direction I'm going yet. If I can build it w/ LS6 parts for under $3k, I'll do it, if not I'll put 5.3 pistons and crank and use it as a replacement for my '00 Z-71.

If the block sonic checks to allow for a 3.90" bore, it's well worth it. Especially if you add the 5.3l/5.7l crank stroke. The larger bore really makes a nice difference from 2200rpms and up.
Good luck with your build up,
Richard
