Default Cam Advice

Hey guys,
First of all I appreciate your time. Anyway a while back when I was a broke college student I rounded up a set of 243 casting heads for my lq4 6.0 1999 silverado. Those have been on there a while but when I got the truck tuned it was obvious that the stock cam was holding the engine back. I finally graduated and have the money to upgrade the valve train and have been researching cams for the past few days. Anyway, my head is swirling with everything I have read and I could really use some advice. The truck is my daily (only vehicle) driver so I need a good all around cam. The truck is also used like a truck should be used, to tow and everything like that. I will upgrade the rockers and the rest of the valve train while I have it tore apart for the cam. The heads came with the 243 beehive springs, however, I thought when I was there, I would go ahead and replace the springs with new ones. Also, I think but im not sure, that I want to stay with the 1.7 rocker ratio. The cam I am currently considering is a comp cam 266/270 dur .520/.524 lift with crane roller rockers and the rest of the good stuff. Let me know what you guys think and again I appreciate it.

if you go with a big cam it will kill low end tq and hp hence why you would need a stall converter. high stall's kill your tow rating.

Im sure thats base dur., no need for rockers, the stock ones work vary good all the way up the 650 lift cams and last forever. From the info you gave id go for a cam around this.. 228-232 558-595 114lsa. is it single cab? 4x4? what weight, converter, and gears do you have? this will help us get you the cam you need. A lq4 with ls6 heads cam take alot of cam without loosing any bottom end, if you have a 3k+ stall anyways. Dont mean to sound rude just want to make sure we get you what you need..

6.0 with 243 heads and tr224 cam would be an awsome daily driver with a yank tt3000 stall

drive good and tow whatever you needed

Its a 3/4 ton extended cab short box with 373 gear ratio and 285/75 R16 tires. It also has the stock torque convertor and trany in it. I would like to avoid changing out the tq if at all possible for several reasons. When it was tuned we pulled a bunch of timing out of it because it was knocking (we thought because of not enough air passing through the cam). My tuner suggested just a stock ls2 cam but I thought I would could do better than that. let me know what you think

I think you need a converter. I am running an LQ4 with 243's a 236/244 @ .050 with a 3600 stall and 4.56 gears and it drives out fine even on 255/70/16 tires. That combo with a little less cam and converter would be freaking awesome one 285's! I'd say a TSP 228 and a 3200 converter...

IF its a 3/4 ton, then you already have an 80E with a somewhat loose stock converter.
and a stall for the 80E aint cheap!

If you dont want to change the converter you may want a split cam, like a 218 228 would be a good place for it. might look into the gm hot cam, its got mild lobes but it still make decent power and you can run it with your ls6 springs and stock push rods.
