Cams in Manual / Auto transmissions
This has been rolling around in my head for a bit. Planning on getting a cam in the Fall. Just wondering because I see everyone posting the different converters you can go with and stuff
For those of us with the MT how does it differ? Can I run a bigger cam with the MT? 214/218 or 220/220 is what I am looking at.

Of course you can! Just know that lowend might suffer if you go too big. The best way to help that on a manual car is to change the rear gears to compensate for lowend loss.
Being a 4.8 I'm not sure If I would go to a 220/220, but something like that 214/218 might work ok with some lower gears.
I would also keep the header primaries at 1 5/8 to keep the lowend where it should be.

I was thinking of going with a 221/226 but after talking with some people decided against it, the duration was a little large for a 4.8 to keep decent driveability. I ended up going a little smaller with some advance ground it so hopefully that will help the low end some. (ill let you know when I get the swap done, hopefully next weekend). I know Comp truck cams are quite a popular choice as well. You going to keep it NA or is there a chance your gonna boost someday?
Also I have 1 3/4 primaries on my LT's and didnt see a noticable loss in torque.

I'd consider something in the 214/218 range, especially with the 3.73 gears. Look at BlackGMC's setup, he's gone through about 3 different cams, including a 220/220ish and currently I believe that he has a 214/220, and has put up his best numbers with the smaller cam as opposed to his bigger ones

Honestly, I'm not sure, but I think it was track times that he was using to get his numbers, I just remember an old thread of his where he stated that his current setup is netting him the best "numbers", and I know that he's referred to the comparo a few times when guys have asked similar questions to the OP.

There are a lot of factors going on at the track that make it not a very good comparison... Very few talk about their crappy times. Those cams are so close that DA could have easily played as much part as the profile.
