Default degree cam

if you jump one tooth on the cam sprocket will that give you 8* of advance? and how far can you advance a 233 570 lift cam on a 5.3 before you have to worry about ptv clearance?

Depends on the size of the cam gear. take 360 (degrees) and devide it by the number of teeth. this will give you how many degrees per tooth it will change. if i remember corectly a tooth on my hot rod was about 15*...

i think i counted them at one time and it was 2:1 cam to crank ratio.

so i went back through some of my old post where i counted this once before and yeah its 8* on cam and 16* on crank. so with that being said can a cam with this much duration go 8* advance without ptv clearance issue? the 5.3l pistons are dished.

Why, I was under the impression that most LS cams had the advance ground into them so they could be installed without that hassle?

if the piston to valve clearance is good then it will be ok i think. this thing pulls and pulls and pulls, but down low its a dog!!!! instead of more stall in the torque converter or swapping cams for now he could just jump a tooth and be done. nice and cheap. later on when he gets more money we will look into more cubes or less cam. right now we are trying to find out what cam it is. the guy told him it was a 233 but the box says 228.

I think with 570 lift you should be ok, but it would be best to clay.

Slap a degree wheel on there while you have it all torn down and verify what the cam is.

Or, if you can afford to be down for a while, pull the cam and ship it to me and I'll degree it and give you back all your events, etc. Don't know what it costs to ship a cam these days... Might be cheaper to do this then buy all the measuring gear if you don't already have it.

well we called the guy back that he bought it from. he is sending the cam sheet over. he said its a 232.7/232.X with 571 lift and 113 lsa. but we will see when the cam card get here. the box he sent the cam in was the replacement cam for this cam. (if that makes since)

thanks for the offer, i will see what he wants to do.
