Engine build parts list.....time to start it
Well im bout to start getting together my parts, hopefully be ordering a few parts within the next 2 weeks.
I have a 5.3l shortblock now. Im gonna have it bored to 5.7l and use off the shelf forged ls1 pistons and rods.
Im wanting to shoot for 11:1 compression. I know head gasket will play a large descision in the compresion ratio. But I also have to decide on what pistons to get. Im going ot be useing the stock crank. With ARP rod bolts and forged rods. Also starting to kick the cam size around but that will probably decided on for sure when I FOR sure decide on which heads to get. Right now im more concerned on what pistons to get and then brand wise on rods, I know 6.125".
Lets see what everyone else says....
eagle rods 4340 389$
Mahle pistons or Eagle?
Eagle crank 800$
Bearing kit?
Gaskets?

Eagle will be plenty and they go for about 400 on ebay. Be sure to match your wrist pin diameter. There are two common sizes SBC .927 and LSX .945, either will work fine. Diamond are cheap but heavy, wiseco are expensive and light, JE is in the middle prce wise but light mine were 39X grams whereas a comparable Diamond will be in the 480-520 range. I wouldnt worry about piston weight too much unless you plan on spinning it to the 7K range.
And you may want to go with a bigger cam

Here are the pistons i would use:

The Mahles's are 4032 alloy, will support up to 200 hp nitrous and because of the harder alloy, they run tighter skirt clearances making them quieter and more durable.
They are light and with these pistons and a stock ls1 head you will have 10.4:1. Now with your 5.3 heads milled a bit and .045" gaskets, that would put you at your goal of 11.0:1.
Here are the rods:

The Scat H-beams are gonna take more punisment than your crank will, and they come with ARP bolts.

If you plan on a spraying a big shot go to some nice wiseco pistons with a big compression hieght(~1.100) they will take the abuse. Alot of the big top dog LME motors use that exact setup and some have taken 500 shots on occasion. 2608 or something like that is the better alloy for nitrous but it'll cost you. Guess the main question is, what type of budget are you on. A nice set of wisecos will run you 800 or so, my JEs were almost 700 but they are custom made for the large stroke that I have so they may be a bit cheaper for your app. Power goals and how much money you got?

From my research on tech the stocker seems to handle 300 pretty easily. The onlly time Ihave seen a problem over there is when someone is using a t-brake and a big shot. I dont remember if that was on tech or not. Would he be happy getting 50K out of the motor? With the deep skirts that running a stock stroke crank allows you wont run into much piston rock and the skirts arent going to come out of the bottom of the cylinders so there is going to be minimal wear on the pistons anyway, just scuffing from cylinder walls. ARP main studs will go a long way towards keeping the crank alive. Im sure you can get the Mahles with a custom ring package. I see the CH is nice on those you posted but can you get the measurement from top ring to top of the piston that is where you need the most meat to survive a large shot. But all the is not a factor if he only plans a 200 shot, more then that and he needs to do ALOT of research on pistons. Chrome rings are nice too, Im wishing I would have went with them:

hahah yes 1slow I might bump my cam size up a "**** hair".
And hey every little bit counts when your talkin about piston wieght. I would like to see right under 1200 on rods and pistons/rings if I can. I would be more then happy with 50k out of it. I would be more then happy with a tranny to hold it to, lol but thats a whole nother post.

Ok lets just go to say i was to go with the pistons that rhino posted and rods. In the shortblock All i need now is a FULL gasket kit, cam, timing chain ls2?, high volume oil pump, and ARP main studs?
What about if I went with Eagle 4340 rods? I can get them for right under 400$ and they come with ARP bolts but only 190,000psi instead of 200,000?
Also appears I can get an eagle 4340 3.622" crank for right under 800$
THis project will NOT be hurried. Money is a facotor but if putting something off a month to purchase the RIGHT product that wont bother me.

if you decide to go with an eagle crank, might as well stroke it for that price. the stroker cranks are the same price. 3.9" would be ideal than a 4" with that size bore. just throwing this out there.
