H/C LQ9. Any low end loss???

Once you raise the compression up to almost 11:1 with the cylinder heads you will not have much issue with low rpm power. Keep in mind your DCR with chosing a small cam and having a higher SCR. What you can end up with if you go with too small of a cam and a higher compression is a motor that is really pissy when it comes to fuel selection. With a 6.0L running that much compression there is no point in going that small on the cam. The stock LS2 has a 204/211 camshaft in it. If you're going to bother going anywhere near that small just get an LS6 cam for it since they are cheap. If you're not going for big results why pay alot.
I wouldn't say that the 210/218 cam will outpower any other from idle to 4800rpm. Magazine testing leaves out alot of variables including tuning. Different heads, compression, exhaust, etc. also change alot of testing info. I'd be betting that a 6.0L with 10.9:1 compression running the new LSR 215/223 .604/.610 on a 112LSA would have no problem making the same or more torque down low with more power all the way to what would be a 6200-6400rpm shift point. If it were all about torque that is probably one of the top pick's right now for a setup like this. I agree with others though I'd still do a TB converter or a 2600 some brand converter. Hell with the stock cam I'd do a converter let alone with more cam.
If your dad's really lost that much I'd have to wonder if some of that might be in the tuning. That cam with stock compression can lose a bit, but not really much to notice. I've worked on enough SSS's with the LQ9 and that cam running various converters. Tuning is alot of the issue in low rpm torque loss. If you could come up with a set of 243's though for your dad's truck he'd get back all of his torque loss and even pick up some over stock down low as well as make more power up high. If tuned in correctly and using the correct surrounding parts nothing beats compression with an N/A motor. Compression is almost more important that cubes depending on the setup.

Does anybody here actually believe the results of hot rod and car craft anymore? They also test TB spacers and the "tornado" and claim dyno proven gains. IMO they are just paid to say what they say. Anyways, if you don't like the tr224, go with the tr220. I love it in my truck, you would have a pretty similar setup to mine. I have great torque down low, i only have a converter for the fun of it, not because i need it. When i tow with the converter locked in od, you can feel the power when you give it a little to gain some speed and its definitely not weak in the low rpms.
