Help! Cylinder wall damage
I am doing an engine teardown and inspection, along with adding a few mods. Got the engine out today and the heads off tonight. Everything looked good, surprisingly a lot like Grippy's engine. I then noticed a little surface rust in the #1 cylinder due to some water droplets which splashed in there when I pulled the Radix about a week ago. I was able to remove the rust with a Scotch-Brite and some WD-40, and the surface now feels smooth to the fingernail. But, as I was inspecting, I noticed a shallow irregular groove near the top of the cylinder as shown in the pic below.
It's not very deep but I am concerned that the upper ring might catch on it and break. Does anybody know what caused this? And more important, what if anything, I can do about it? Might a cylinder hone take it out? Please help!

I just went out to the garage and checked it again. If I run my fingernail across it I can feel just a hint of roughness, maybe a few microns. Thinking about it more calmly now, it must have been there from the beginning and so hasn't hurt anything so far. I guess I was freaking out thinking that the surface rust might have pock-marked the cylinder wall to uselessness.

Aslong as it isn't scared you should be fine. When I picked up my 6.0 it had surface rust in 3 of the cylanders, where it looked like water had been laying.. I cleaned it up and it is smooth as can be and only for a lil dicoloration, I am going to run it..

yeah, if thats all it feels like i wouldnt sweat it. My dumbass left a motor sitting in my truck for about two years without spark plugs in it, and all eight of the cylinders had rust in them. I just used some oil and a scotchbrite pad to clean them as much as i could and put it back together. It smoked a little when i started it, and for a couple days after, but stopped after the rings had a chance to re-seat.
