nope i thought very hard about pulling the motor apart for new cam bearings, balanced rotating assembly, new rings, new main bearings. all wasted money to the average man, but when you want something to last its worth the few lil new parts added to make it last.
ive seen stock 4.8s turn 6800 theyre crazy but who knows.
im honestly waiting to hear 5900-6000 bc the "truck intake stops pulling past that" which i have a dyno graph that shows my truck flat lines at 6500 and never drops a single rpm to 7000.

if your power stops at 6500 I'd shift it at about 67-6800. I wouldnt worry about failure at all. my 4.8 spins to 7K on occasion with 120K miles on it, BONE STOCK LOL. plenty of people shift theirs at 7500ish without a problem. Id say do it according to power, dont worry about parts breaking, they arent going to

if your power stops at 6500 I'd shift it at about 67-6800. I wouldnt worry about failure at all. my 4.8 spins to 7K on occasion with 120K miles on it, BONE STOCK LOL. plenty of people shift theirs at 7500ish without a problem. i shift at 6800 but im looking for that extra second of 2nd gear. (i have a 1 peice driveshaft and i DO NOT TRUST IT) im wanting to up just my 2-3 to 7k and put it on the track to see the difference, then up it to 7200. if i see no mph/e.t difference then ill go back to either 6800 or 7000.
yeah the power flat lines at 6500 but im not willing to run a 3600 converter so we put the shifts higher to help the little 3200 around lol. i will be upgrading to a 3400 so im sure itll be even better

I would think the only limiting factor is your valve train and how it's put together, springs, lifters, rockers, push rods, valves, etc...
I don't see the rotating assembly having any problems holding together up to +8K rpm's or more. First thing that's gonna happen IMO is your gonna eat a valve because you have the wrong springs in there, that would be the first casualty I would think. Some race LS motors are spinning to just south of 10K rpm's.
