Default How much$/HP gains? and how it works?

I have searched for info on this. But I want to know how much a "cam" is. Or even what and how a cam works. I don't understand what a cam does. and how much is the typical gain in hp and torque. I'm interested in getting an STS turbo system on the truck but am looking for a cheaper way out. I'm still in hs so I have only enough for some bolt ons right now. Getting the chip messed with tues and buying a cold air intake then also. Just wanna see the price on these cams.

The price and how much HP/TQ depends on the cam and the make. The cam opens and closes the valves, higher lift and/or deration means more gas and air meanin more power.and sts would make more power but would cost alot more.

not quite sure on cost but it does vary depending on what you get

a cam usually gains about 40hp

what do you mean by gettin the chip messed with... you will need a mailorder/custom/dyno /street tune when you ge the cam

you money is also better spent on something besides an intake probably gears or posi

a camshaft (cam for short) is a shaft with lobes on it . its purpose is to open the valves

a different (high-performance) cam shaft will open the valves more and keep them open longer
the valves allow fuel and air to enter the combustion chamber where spark also enters and explodes on top of the piston which is attached to the connecting rods and crank
this action turns the crank and therefore causes the other cylinders to do the same and this makes your motor turn

ah..ok..I want to get a posi put in...Spinning one tire is no fun I think I understand now...now that 40 hp is all across the board? Right..or does it just mainly add to the peak HP?

well some cams "come on" at around 3000 but after that its all the way to when it shifts

you do know that the bigger the cam the more it lopes at idle right? ( not be smartass just making sure you know)

All your "How Does it work" questions answered.

Cost $300-400 New. Look in the parts for sell section and get one much cheaper.

There is no "chip" to mess with. You will need your PCM (the computer in your truck that controls everything) adjusted for the new cam.

i recommend you read through the many arcticles on that site, very helpful info and illustrations.

Before you spend lots of money do TONS of research or you might as well throw your money away, the right combination of parts is essential to making power.
