Katech rod bolt install with pics
ok fellas i know a lot of people out there start building up higher horsepower and want a little more strength in the bottom end. well ARP and Katech both make rod bolts for our engines. I will be using the Katechs for this demonstration.
I have my engine on a stand. making it a lot easier. If you are doing this with the engine still in the truck, you will have to remove the pan obviously and go about it in a different way. this is the easy way.
1. pull one stock bolt at a time. when you get it near the top you have ferrals that need to come out.when you see threads of the bolt about a quarter of an inch out of the rod, take a pair of plyers and wiggle gently and the ferral will come out with the rod bolt. Do not take the rod off. Don't pick it up, toss it to a buddy to inspect. just leave it alone. unless your doing new rod bearings. then it's ok to pick up.
the silver things are ferrals. they need to come out. From what i can find out through my research, all 99 up engines have them.
2. take the supplied lube and lube up the threads.
pic didn't come out that great.
lubed up bolt ready to go in. the tube has more than enough lube to do all the bolts. i just get the threads covered. i don't over use the stuff.
3. install the bolt into the rod you are working on. Katech recommends that you torque these down to 30foot pounds then backing off and doing it again to 30 foot pounds. Then the final torque spec according to Katech is 50 foot pounds.
rotate the engine as need to reach all of the bolts. i know this isn't the best write up but i think it will help a few people.
If anyone has anything to add please feel free.
