Looking for some cylinder head advice
I'm going to pick up a set of heads with my tax return. I was planning on going with TEA Stage II 243s.
I talked to a friend with a set of AFR 225s with pac springs for sale. Kinda torn now. The AFR heads have 72cc combustion chambers.
I have no plans on going FI anytime soon. Probably not going any bigger in cubes anytime soon either.
Im running a 230/236 .581/.581 cam on a 114 lsa.
So what do you think? I know the engine won't see much of a compression bump with the AFRs. But I think they would complement my cam better. The money is within a couple hundred bucks. And the AFRs are local.
Thanks

If you are still running the 317 stock heads you won't see any bump unless you go to thinner headgasket as I believe they are 72cc chambers already. The TEA heads are gonna be at least 64.5 CC chambers as that is what a 243 is stock. That would give you a pretty good bump in compression to probably 11:0:1 or so. The flow #s between the two are probably pretty close , and the runner CC is very close if not the same, but the AFR will be better if you do go FI as they have a thicker deck than factory heads. Unless you run alot of boost that is really no big benefit. If you are getting the AFR at a really good price and they don't need freshening you could spend very little and have them milled some, but not real sure how much AFR would recommend milling them.

What would yall take them down to? I figure in order to see a significant gain, I'd have to mill them alot. Id hate to ruin them. Maybe take them down to 70cc and run a thinner head gasket?

If it was me and you are going to get the AFR, I would send Tony Mamo an email / pm and ask his advice on how much. I know when you start milling heads more than a certain amount you run into issues with intake alignment if it isn't cut to. He designs their heads and can give you the best advice on that. I feel pretty sure you could go to 68cc or so without any problems. Good luck and I think you will be much happier with the AFR.
