LQ4 bearing wear with pics
Looking for some opinions. I picked this up being told it was a 40,000 mile pull out. The plan is to stab in an ISKY cam and hook up a turbo. I'm not trying to set any records. Just want a fun daily driver. I couldn't justify putting all the time and money into this build without taking a peek.
Main bearing:
There are wear spots on the sides where the bearing halves come together which doesn't bother me too much. The grooves running around the circumference are weird. They are very even in spacing and depth. Depth is so faint that you can barely feel it with your finger nail. Its almost as they come that way. There are little specs that look like lint. Not sure what the hell is going on with that, but the surface is smooth and even to the touch.
Rod bearing:
It has the same wear spots on the sides with additional wear on the bottom. And those same grooves.

It came out of an '05 van so it is very possible that it could have been rebuilt. I didn't pull the bearings from the caps to check for numbers/stamps, so I have no idea if those are factory bearings or not.
Mike, I appreciate the link. My pictures don't seem as extreme, but I can see how the "seeds" of massive failure have been sewn. Couldn't I check the torque on another main/rod and use plasti gauge to see if the bearings are over torqued? I'd rather not pull it all apart to mic the journals to determine if it has been rebuilt. Safe is better than sorry though.
