Default LQ4 with GM Hot Cam Kit

Figured I'd post up Question Here Not ls1tech Purchased a LQ4 motor won't say how much, any how tore engine down Everything looks good going to have machine shop clean it up and new cam bearings, All Bearings, Rings Don't want to do much other than that. I have a LS6 Manifold and GM Hot Cam, new 243 ls6 heads I was thinking about changing to lq9 Pistons and using the 243s and hot cam. Thoughts????? Automatic trans 2800 stall 3:73 gears in a 56 chevy

The LS6 intake isnt that great on lowend, but it will look way better in your chevy than the ugly truck intake. The LQ9 pistion and NON milled 243s will mimic the ls2 giving you 11.1 compression. This made 400 hp so the proper cam, exhaust, and tune should give you a 500 motor hp bragging machine.

As far as the HOT cam it will be better than the stock cams truck/LS line for sure, but there are other options out there that seem to perform better. TSP line 220, 224, 228 etc. Comp cam 216/220 220/224 224/228 Being that the truck is pretty light and you have a 2800 stall you could afford to trade some low end tq for more midrange and top end hp.

The hot cam seems to be more of a drive in idle sound cam verses performance IMO

I know there are better cam choices, I want to keep on the cheap I also have a ZO6 cam 5308 that I have Came with 243 heads, Kinda want to run what I brung.I also have the 317 heads. I could also put these on the LS1 that I have. Was saving that for another project.

I vote 243s for the heads and Zo6 cam since you already have them. The springs on the 243s should be good to go for that cam also if they don't have to high of millage! Or maybe look for a low millage used cam in the CL.

not sure this applies but could be food for thought. I was looking at options of swapping flat top pistons in my lq4 and I couldn't find a budget option or at least the information that would help me. what I did find is that about 2004 all motors received the floating pin rods and that will mate to the flat top piston options easily. my engine being a 2002 had press fit piston rings which killed my piston options.

Interesting, I'll keep that in mind when looking for a LQ4/9 motor latter down the road for my turbo build. Since you are on a budget I would just live with those pistons.

With stock 243s you will be at 10.2 compression and with .03 milled you would be at 10.6, If you throw some .04 gaskets you should be creeping up on 11.1

I talked to machine shop, Thought I would have to change rods to use say the LQ9 pistons but they said you can use the the floating pistons with the press fit rods and forget the locks GM LQ9 pistons are fairly cheap
