If it's truly a 2001 model, it will have the aluminum heads and the short crank, so he should be good to go with whatever transmission he chooses.

You can make the long crank 99-00 block work with a 60E if you use a custom torque converter BTW

Man look around on here and find a used 224 or 220 cam and a used 3000 stall and some longtubes and a valuetrac from sons machine shop for 325 and you will have a pretty fast truck.

Honestly, if you're aiming for that much HP down the road just get the 80e and be done. Put a shift kit in the 80e and a tune and you've got a very stout setup.

6.0, 4l80e. ebay headers and a tune in a reg cab 1500 will leave you saying wow even without a cam and converter.
I’m going through the same thing but I’m lucky to have an 01 Sierra c3 so I already have the 80e

If it's a 1500 chassis, it's still a 4L60e. You can compare a picture of a 4L80e to yours if you want but no half ton ever came with a factory installed 4L80e.

The whole 1500HD thing is a load of dumb lol. It's why I said half ton aswell to avoid confusion.
