Thanks, I dont understand why people throw untested junkyard engines in their trucks either. These engines are easy to put together, really the only special tools you need is a torque wrench, puller, and torque angle meter.

Long as you use a trusted machine shop to grind and polish the crank, clean and hone the block, and install the cam bearings its hard to screw it up. Even though I know the torque specs I still make it a habbit to use my engine book just to make sure its corrrect.

Yesterday my buddy Jay helped me remove the old engine, the new engine is sitting in the truck but still needs to have everything finished up.

Finished up everything today, engine runs great and makes real good power for a tiny 5.4. sorry fellas no idle clip....nobody wants to hear stock exhaust!

Compared to a stock 5.3 the flat top pistons and LS1 cam make a good jump in performance and did not cost one cent more than using the dished pistons and stock truck cam.

Yeah, the 427 is going to be fun, long way to go $ on the LSX block. There are some parts needed on the LSX that are unique and not borrowed from the production side. The rear cover is one for example....that 3lb piece of aluminum is quite expensive!

Last night I put about 40 miles on the truck after breaking in the engine for about 30 min in the driveway, holds 75-80 on the highway with very minimal throttle. The old tired 5.3 struggled to hold 70 without constantly applying enough throttle to down shift the transmission, any hills or headwind would completely bog it down.

Overall I am very pleased with the results, the added power of the new flat top pistons and new LS1 cam are a decent upgrade. I think the main power difference comes from the compression ratio jump from the stock 9:5.1 to 10:5.1

Pic of the new engine partially installed from the other day.

Anyone want to buy a low mile 223K engine?

Here is what happened to the old engine, broken piston.
