Need help, building 408 for pulling trailer
I have a 1999 chevy 6.0 with a 100k on it and was wanting to build a 408 to get some more low end tq for towing my enclosed trailer to the track. Looked on here and all I could find was turbos on all kinds of race trucks, not much in the way of people trying to tune up there tow vehicles.
Was thinking of finding some alum 6.0 heads, Zo6 take out cam (or some thing compareable), and a 408 stroker kit with some hyperutectic pistons (tired of the GM piston knock).
Let me know what you think????

I am in the same boat Twigg. I am looking to build a 382 with a LS1 block I have on the stand for my DD Tahoe. I already have a cam, heads, injectors left over from my truck builds. So far the Eagle rotating assemblies have been the most economical options but I am interested to hear more about the Callies LSc assemblies.

You guys would be surprised with just a set of lower gears will do. Danny towed my dirt track car to the track all loaded down. 12k lbs and never jumped out of over driver and never unlocked the converter, went up and down some tall hills. Hes got a 5.3 with an ls6 cam and 4.56 gears. No need to build a high dollar 408 just for pullling when that 6.0 will do just fine with everything done right

Ok before this thread gets hijacked by a bunch of people just wanting to put a $5000 blower or turbo on everything STOP NOW. For the same $$$ i can have a verry good running 0 mileage 408 (with out current piston slap). Was looking at some ls6 heads 249 casting I think. Or also heard about using some Esclade heads and intake with a zo6 cam and a 408 would be really good low end set up.

You're wasting your time and money sticking an LS6 cam in a 408. Anything in the 220s is a baby cam for a 408, IMO.
You'd be looking for 243's, btw. 799's off the NNBS are also the same design, different casting number. Difference between is they have steel valves, and the 243's off an LS6 have sodium filled. I think the 243's off an LS2 also have steel valves.
Its not bad advice to put a blower on the 6.0. Its probably less money, something you can do yourself, and will pull your trailer no problem.

Stick with 317 or L92 heads (if you wanna spend the money on them) you'll probably still be over 10-1. A set of 243's on a 408 would yield way to high of compression. Unless you wanna run your tow vehicle on race gas too. I think the 408 is a great idea. But I think the gear idea is good also...
