Ill suggest talking to Richard@WCCH 818-705-5454
He can get you all the parts you need to build your 408 right and at a good price. I think youre going to want to hit close to 10:1 CR, a very low 220 duration cam and some small intake runner heads. If it was me Id run a 212/218ish cam. I had a 220 in my 420 and it still needed less cam for towing but it was around 9.4:1CR and had 245cc runner heads so that hurt my low end performance.
What is your budget?
If it was me Id build a 408 with an eagle crank, scat rods and probe pistons(aka cheap forged) with cam near 212/218 with either a set of 862(5.3 heads) worked over by Richard or a set of his edelbrock 205 heads if you dont mind spending some cash. The small intake runner will be key to a nice torguey motor along with as high SCR as possible. Without getting too deep into it try and get your DCR as close to 9 as possible and you will have a nice running motor.
You may also try contacting Patrick G for a custom spec'd cam once you get the longblock lined out.
With all that said I think if it were me Id go with a lower mileaged LQ4 and buy a used radix, with a nice blower/tow cam. That would net you more tq and with some trans tuning will give you a truck that handles hills much better.
You may not like people saying to get a blower but these guys on here have either done it or seen it done and may know a thing or two and can help save you some heartache and money. Ive had two stroker motors, driven tons of setups and I can honestly say Id get a lower mileage LQ4 and a radix. You cant beat the price of a used radix and the tq it gives you. While running that setup you can have your current motor on the stand and build it as funds allow.

Ok before this thread gets hijacked by a bunch of people just wanting to put a $5000 blower or turbo on everything STOP NOW. For the same $$$ i can have a verry good running 0 mileage 408 (with out current piston slap). Was looking at some ls6 heads 249 casting I think. Or also heard about using some Esclade heads and intake with a zo6 cam and a 408 would be really good low end set up.
Callies Perf ill check it out, thanks
