You wont be able to see the skirt, you will be able to see any abnormal wear on the thrust surfaces on the cylinder walls. Cheapest way to go is get a low mileage used LQ4 put ARP rod bolts in, transfer your cam, heads, and new lifters and let her rip. Your gonna spend at least 1500 plus for forged pistons, new bearings, and machine work. Plus the down time. You can get a used motor for that.

well, i put a bench press bar on the side of the motor and tap tap tapity. put the bar on the valve cover and head and nothing at all really quiet. put it back on the block and there it is. i put it on toward the back and its quiet...er but the front two are loud. so can i put some 10w30 and a bottle of lucas oil in there to get by for awhile?

I bet that it could make that noise for a while and not give you any problems but noise. I've had vehicles where piston slap is characteristic due to the wrist pin design. The ZZx crate motor knocked like crazy for over 80k that I owned it and never missed a beat. You could try a sligtly thicker weight oil, but I doubt it would make a difference, but maybe a 10w-30 is worth a shot.

hell, i need to change the oil anyway from the head swap. i still wonder if it was caused by the hard driving i did the day it started. my guess is the piston just swoll up enough (during long boost period) to wear a little and now it clacks around.
