I remember the first time you went to tune my truck and I filled up before bringing to you with premium and it was such **** gas it was retarding timing and you wanted me to burn that tank off and hit up Chevron or Shell.

Do you remember where you filled up at? I refuse to go to Tesero now.

Roger, I am beginning to think it is more the pistons than the rings. I did a Google search on boosting hypereutectic pistons, and it seems like a common problem. Several pics of pistons broke like yours.

Gadget, that's what I was trying to say. Any amount of ring bind at all and the stock pistons WILL BREAK. For the OP I just don't see any downside to opening up the gaps while the engine is torn down beyond minimal oil consumption.

People break them all the time from detonation.

Just knowing that the ends butted even a little would have me re-gapping the rest of them, even if my piston didn't explode.

Maybe take this as an opportunity to throw some Wiseco K474M96 pistons in there? Then let us know how it does on 12-14 psi??? ARP rod bolts as well maybe? Try some thermal coating on top of the pistons to reduce chance of detonation and help keep the piston structure's temperature down a few degrees.

I'm actually opening mine up (top ring land) to .024-.026 for a little bleed off and heat. I believe it was a article where Duttweiler recomended it for boosted motors. If your going for more boost like you mention, I would do it. The gap from the top of the piston to the first ring land is defiantly a weak point in the pistons. Also did you change out your pistons to flat tops?

Come to think of it. It could have broke from from to much stress on the top ring land or to little gap. Piston is going to heat up before the cylinder which in terms caused the piston to expand and the top gap between the first ring land and piston stressed. I don't think it was detonation.
