Yes, that is correct. The 4.8 rod is longer. Here's an early 4.8 piston/rod next to one of my 2005 L33 piston/rod. L33 is on top, 4.8 is the bottom.

Never said the 4.8 or flat tops couldn't or could take more abuse. I consider them equal just one creates more compression. Also that magazine article cracks me up. Here is my version.....Twin t76's on a 5.3 or is it a 4.8

Does my Metco 100mm idler pulley count as a swap too or I'm I at a disadvantage? Don't want to wrestle with those ford boys.

Also, I measured the top of the top ring land to the top of the piston on both a LM7 5.3 piston and a 4.8 piston. Both are .175.

correct. I don't remember a number being put in the article. I thought they just said "we had the stock piston rings gapped" but, I'm sure if they were contacted, they would be able to help out.

Right on. Put that to a rest. In the Hot Rod article they did mention in one of the captions that they opened the top rings up to I believe it was .028 or .030. I wouldn't go over .026 though. It's going to cause bleed off. Also one back at ya.

Touché sir. I missed the text in that pic.

From the article:
The one change we made to the short-block was increasing the gap of the top rings from 0.015 to 0.028 inch. Piston failures can usually be traced to the rings butting, sticking on the bore, and snapping the ring land. Extra ring gap cures this issue. If you look closely you can see the sizable rust stain midway down the No.8 cylinder.

I think I'm on the right track here. We'll see what happens after she's back together.
