With a 5.3l engine I'd recommend a Comp Cams 208º/208º .557"/.557" with a 112º lsa. As soon as you break the 210º number the stock converter will make the low end sluggish till over 2k rpms. The 208º will swap with no tuning although tuning will make the truck run better and that also goes for a stock cam.

Regarding the wet blanket guy, Lingenfelter cams are cut by Comp, so I wouldn't worry about tuning, QC, or anything else for that matter. It sounds like he had a tuner who didn't know what he was doing.
I paid $350 for an almost identical cam from Cam Motion, and it worked great in my 5.3L Avalanche. I actually gained power off-idle with my stock converter. I never got it tuned, and I gained 15-20 RWHP across the entire powerband.
And the price is right for the Lingenfelter at $250.

Heres a question...
lingenfelter lists, as most companies do, the cam as an LS1/6 cam. Now, I know that cubes affect the 'radicallity' (yeah, you like that word) of the cam, going from a 5.7 to a 5.3 is not that big of a jump, so I imagine a 'good daily driver' cam for an LS1 is still good in a 5.3, BUT, does it increase the need for a tune?
