Stock locks/retainers work/fit fine.
Most will recommend hardened pushrods.
If you run a smaller cam, stock length SHOULD be fine.
Easiest way to tell, measure the base circle of new cam and compare to stock.
If you want some interesting reading, search "pushrod length"

Newbie Camswap Checklist
Alright, there has been alot of good **** in this thread...lets see if I can put it all together.
Comp Cams 208º/208º .557"/.557" with a 112 Deg LSA
LS6 Springs
LS1 Locks - handful
Crank bolt - 2
1 - longer to seat the pulley
1 - factory or ARP Harmonic Balancer bolt
Timing Chain - LS2 upgrade
Oil Pump - Stock LS1
Cam Swap Gasket Kit - SDPC
U/D pulley - maybe
Tools...
Hand tools + 24mm socket
3 Jaw Pulley puller
Breaker bar
cam install handle, or three bolts (can someone define the size)
compressor
compression fittings - can someone go into detail on this.
valve spring compressor tool
5/16 dowl pins - does someone have a pic of where they go?
Am I forgetting anything?

Crank bolt...Check
Don't these heads have the same lifter retainer trays that LS1's have. I know that during an LS1 cam swap, just before you physically remove the cam, give it several full rotations and, with no pressure from the springs, the lifters will be held up by the trays.
I imagine the same holds true for the stock 5.3 heads?

Same theory...doesnt always work. I had a lifter that would not stay up (engine had only 5K miles on it) I went and bought the magnets. Its a gamble to do it without them, do you feel lucky....punk
Do a search on the pen magnets, its been covered a bunch.

The same telescoping magnets that you use when you drop a goddamn washer into a crevice that it shouldn't fit into, and you can't get your hand in there because you don't have enough movable joints in your arm...sorry...
Is that the magnet you are talking about?
