Default Swapped in a 5.3, 862 Heads question...

I swapped a 5.3 into a 2000 GMC Jimmy. Had to get rid of the V6!

The engine is stock. Its from a 2001 Silverado. I am running a 6" cone filter on the intake and modified truck manifolds. I use HPTuners pro to run in speed density and use an NGK AFX wideband.

I'm putting GM part# 12498544 MLS (.051 compressed) head gaskets on it. I am having my machine shop remove a broken exhaust bolt that broke below the surface. I told him to shave .050 off.

I plan on doing a proper build in the future. I would mind raising the compression a little though. Spending the 50 for cleaning the heads up anyway.

Its running 7.350 push rods now. I thought stock was 7.400???

Will I have piston to valve issues???

That depends on what cam you're going to run. Pushrod length has nothing to do with PTV clearance.

Is there a reason that you're running 7.350 pushrods? The stock pushrods are very close to 7.4. I'm more concerned that you're going to run into a problem with too short of pushrods not putting the correct amount of preload on your lifters.

No cam upgrade for now.

Shaving the heads changes the geometry of the valvetrain. Am I wrong?

Thats whats in it. They appear to be stock gm parts.

I milled my heads .030 and used a .040 thickness gaskets and needed 7.350 as per a pushrod checker. I also changed lifters though too, which may be where I'm getting my numbers mixed up, as the LS7 lifters are a bit taller.

When I built my first 5.3, I milled the heads .040 with LS7 lifter and had 7.35 pushrods....

So... I'm assuming nobody has removed .050 from the heads or equivalent from heads with thinner gasket...

I've searched the net and numorous forums, found nothing. Has anyone added a cam to a stock 5.3 with .050+ more lift???

I will post post details when they become available...

I know there's someone on here that milled their 243 heads .050. it's been a long time since I've seen his post.

Basically it's a good idea to get a pushrod checker. I think you're supposed to have .080 of PTV clearence minimum per GM spec. You may be best off doing a clay impression so that you know for sure.

I have the pushrod checker already.
Doing the clay, just trying to get my numbers together.

Thanks for the info
