I think I remember reading the oil pump shimming with the LS2 chain in the tutorial from LS1howto.com. But that tutorial is for an install on a F-Body, so the shimming part may not apply to the truck motors. Can anyone who has done this themselves confirm for sure?

And would it be worth replacing the oil pump while I have it off? I was thinking maybe replacing it with a new LS6 oil pump, which can be bought for like $70-$80. What do you think?

EDIT - My bad, I just re-read the tutorial and it's the double-roller chain that they talked about needing some shimming.

By the way, the springs I have are the green/yellow LS6 springs - will those work well with the cam listed above and the LQ4 6L? And are these 7.4 hardened pushrods from Comp Cams the right ones to go with? I guess I should've probably checked all of this out before buying the stuff, but what I can say I am an impulse buyer!!

I'd replace the chain only because you have quite a few miles on it, but other than that just replace the cam, springs, and a few gaskets.

Hey, y'all.

I'm resurrecting this old thread because I'm guessing stuff has changed in the last decade...

What are the "while you're in there" replacements for a 2003 6.0 motor?

Oil pump is the biggie. On a 150,000 mile truck, is this pretty much an automatic replacement, or are there other considerations?

Timing chain and pushrods are the other things I'm pondering.

Any opinions or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Always replace the cam retainer/thrust plate when doing a cam swap. The orange gasket on the old plate gets squished flat then the oil pressure from the oil galleys dumps into the front cover causing low pressure issues. For only $15 it's a no brainier to replace.
