telling a lq4 from a 1q9

Damn, thought I was onto something. The only other 6.0 I've looked at is a buddie's SSS in hawaii and it was dbw so I figured that was the difference.

You got that back wards 99-00 had a longer tail crank... in 01 they went to the shorter tail crank and used a spacer to compensate for use with the 4L80E Transmission

I'm kinda curious. Would numbers from a compression test be higher on an LQ9 than an LQ4. I understand that is not the purpose, but wouldn't the avg number be higher given the CR was higher?

The lq9s have better rods until 05 then the lq4 has the good ones too. The lq9 is higher compression, that could be good or bad depending on what your doing with it.

if the motor is still with the body the only way is by the vin number.
if it is sitting out just a motor only, you have to rip in to it.
