Why cant you just use the vin number?
For example, my vin number is
2GCEK19N0313XXXXX 2003 SS
1GCHC29U33E355893 2003 2500 3/4 ton 6.0
1GCGK13U53F159028 2003 1500 HD heavy half ton 6.0
1GCHC29GX3E294469 2003 2500 3/4 ton with 8.1
1GCHK291X3E108850 2003 2500 3/4 ton duramaxx

It appears that you need to look at the 8th digit of the VIN.

N denotes LQ9 (my truck)
U denotes LQ4 (the 1500 hd and gas 3/4 ton)
G denotes 8.1
1 appears to be Duramaxx for the 5 or so 3/4 ton diesels that I looked at.

Hope this helps.

Yenko
