Default Towing 5.3L Cam

My dads truck is a 2005 CCSB 2wd 5.3, he daily drives it and tows quite a bit with it. I wanna do a couple things for his birthday

Im gonna do an intake, Muffler,Tune, Shift Kit,Servo ,cam, springs, pushrods

So the question is, what cam could i put in it keeping excellent daily driving manners, but help with towing(maybe a good torque cam), and still pass smog

i saw this one ,but im not sure if it would pass smog
http://www.compcams.com/Cam_Specs/Ca...csid=1399&sb=0

(oh and prob gonna be keeping the stock converter for a good while)

any input appreciated

I have a 2006 Silverado ECSB 4X4 with a 5.3 in it. I wanted good performance, but still have great towing and pulling power. I had Texas Speed get a custom grind for me. It is a 212/218 .558"/.563" on a 112LSA and 108ICL. I installed it along with Longtube Headers and a Cold AIr Intake with a custom tune. It is a strong pulling cam! It will burn my Mickey Thompson 33's. I've pull boats and a 32' camper trailer with it, and neither were any trouble. I've taken the truck mudding and pull some buddies out with it. It has a good noticeable lope, but has excellent street manners. I've never had it stall or surge, but keep in mind, I spent a full day tweaking the tune. This cam was not hard to tune for either. It pulls great from down low all the way up to 6200ish rpm. It really shines from 3000-up. Where stock trucks get sluggish around 90mph and take a while to get to 100, my truck keeps on pulling and you're at 110-120 pretty fast! Overall, it's a great all around cam that still pulls like a frieght train down low!

did you have to do any convertor changing? with that camshaft and did you just run a set of 918? or did you go with the duals

I am using the VHP Ultra Torque with the Crane spring, roller rockers and pushrods. It's almost like stock with a bit of a lope but does a great job pulling my 6500lb RV trailer. I'll be adding a Maggie if it ever gets here.

DUR @ .004" 272*/280*
DUR @ .050" 210*/218*
LIFT .551/.551
OVERLAP 46*
LSA 116*

They also have one with the same numbers but a 112 LSA called the ASP-Kicker if you like the rougher idle.

DUR @ .004" 272*/280*
DUR @ .050" 210*/218*
LIFT .551 / .551
OVERLAP 52*
LSA 112*

The site says that a tune is not required but I recommend to do it. I had a couple of flat spots. Either cam should pass emissions easily. With the roller rockers you'll have nearly .600" of lift.

I'm gathering everything together for a VHP 043 "TOWING & PERFORMANCE" cam:

DUR @ .004" 272* / 280*
DUR @ .050" 210*/ 218*
LIFT .531/.531
OVERLAP 48*
LSA 114*

No, I did not change the convertor. And yes, I used the revised 918's.

A full day tweakin tune, but it wasn't hard to tune for? Sounds like an oxymoron.
