Default Tq monster: what would you build?

ok I have a 84 chevy K10 with a weak 305. its a work truck so I am not worried about HP but I want a tq monster. what would you build? prefferably a small block on a 5k budget

I am thinking:
383 w roughly 10-1 compression
aluminum heads
comp cams extreme 4x4 218/226 .462/.480
edelbrock performer intake
speed demon carb

truck has headers and dual exaust

I have a 383 with throttle body injection and 10.1:1 compression, 222/234 114 lobe sep, self ported heads and it has awsome tq. Below 2500 it has tons more tq than my blown 4.8 even when my 4.8 is building descent boost.

As mentioned above "Strokers" make the torque.

My 408 will be making aprox 550+ RWTQ when I get my belt slipping issue resolved next spring.

sounds like a good combo. just try not to go over .480 lift and you'll have a torque monster

I'm curious, I've never heard of this before. Why is it that you say you don't want to go over .480 lift?

if he's doing this on a budget, and if going over .480 lift, he'll have to get the longer slot rockers b/c the stock ones will cut and shear off the rocker studs, taller valve covers b/c the rocker arms will hit the top of stock height valve covers, also like this it will be reliable, street friendly, and still be able to make lots of torque. this is how i've always built old small blocks...

I second what he is saying, because I have been there with him on that one. If you follow what old bluecajun is saying you won't be disappointed....

Sounds weird to me....I mean, the lift on a stock cam is something like .461....sure you don't mean .580 and not .480?

The lift on stock gen1 engines are typically .390/.410. Very rarely did any peformance small blocks from the factory reach the .450 range. Back in the old days they didn't have spring materials that could hold up to big lifts for 100k+ miles like they do now.

Thats a very good setup. If you want plenty of torque, your best bet is a stroker.
