Default Vortec 350 5800 RPM

This is BS! I didn't want to sound out of line but I've been playing with Vortec motors since they came out and installed my first 150 nitrous setup that NOS said they couldn't get to work. I actually sprayed over 20 15# bottles. Richard over at Strictly Performance in Houston can verify this since I bought most of my nitrous from him. I can tune 600 to 1500 idle and 4800 to 8000 RPM in 100 increments. I don't know who came up with the 5800 myth. Here's my proof call Hypertech and ask them if they ever made a custom cartridge #5002. They no longer support the cartridge or tuner. I purchased this back in 1999 or 2000 to tune for the cam and headers I installed. I still have this and the PCM, cartridge and tuner since I installed the LS1. I guess it could be pretty valuable to someone who really wanted to raise RPM to 8000.

I don't see why you couldn't raise the rpm, it all has to do with software, and software can be changed and re written. Maybe the orignal ware was written to cap the RPM, however, a good tuner that knows what he is doing should be able to change the max RPM. I would assume that most people do not know that tuners take the stock ware and begin to disect it, re-write it, and change just about everything. These people live, breathe, and work code. This is why if you are building a motor that is controlled by a computer, you need a good tuner that knows their stuff, and you need to constantly communciate with them so they know what to write into the software.

Im sorry man... i didnt mean to cause a fuss. I was just relaying the info that all of the big dogs on here with our trucks are saying. I hope they chime in here and say what they know about it because like I said before I dont have any first hand experience tuning these trucks.
I agree that it doesnt make any sense though.

Don't apologize bro, I don't think there's much of this info out there and I wanted to get it out. I barely found out about the cartridge. I was talking to Gary one day and he said he could burn me a custom cartridge for my tuner and wholla! I can say I've been there and done that! LOL I'll sure miss my vortec but love my LS1!!!!!!!!!1

It would be really nice for tunercats to get a hold of one of those so that they might could figure out why there software will only let you set it to 5800rpm. Well It is a good thing that there is someone with proof that it can be done.

What tuning software were you using to tune the L31 with, there is only 1 tuning woftware to do cutom tunes for them!So you are saying that you could spin your L31 past 5800RPM and up to say 6200RPM?If you could then yo are the 1st ever with that stock PCM and OS and there are alot of damn good tuners out there

Yep, I have an old hypertech power programmer with a custom flashed 5002 cartridge that plugs into the bottom power port of the programmer. I'd be happy to meet you one day and plug my 97 PCM into your truck just to prove it. It will let you go up to 8000 RPM with a top speed of 255 unlike the power programmer which you and I know will never happen. It's actually good for all 96-97 5.7 and 7.4's You ought to know me by now vortec350, I've been around for awhile and don't have any reason to BS you. When I get a chance I will take a picture of the install instructions that came with it and post it. It even says 4800 to 8000 RPM. Like I said, I might have something here and it's pretty strange that Hypertech quit making them shortly after I bought it.

Yeah, that's weird I've always tought the redline on the vortecs was at 5800RPM and no matter how much you tried to tune it out the PCM will still adjust itself to 5800RPM. I got this info from a guy at FSC.com so I wouldnt know for sure. I said he tried and tried to get over 5800 rpm but to no avail. Hopefully he'll see this and chime in.

Your truck looks real good, especially with the LS1!
