I am joining the group that thinks that lifter pre-load, or something else like a bad cam, started the problem. If it was one lifter, it would be easy to say that you got a faulty one. You never hear of this happening with the wrong lifter pre-load, you just hear of complaints of noise. A bad heat treat on the cam is starting to sound more likely the more that I type. That is exactly what happened. The cam flaked, ruined five lifters, one so bad that the wheel came out and got stuck between the block and cam. This stopped the cam, and the momentum of the crank ripped the cam bolts out. I don't think that loose cam bolts would let the sprocket rattle back and forth long enough to cause this kind of damage. The bolt holes don't show prolonged damage, either. Just instant damage.
There, problem solved.

does sounds very plausible, i would agree with you there about the lifter breaking and causing it to snap the bolts, makes sense sense due to it being pushed down and causing to break even further as it did. do you work for CSI?

Were there circular scratches in the front cover where you could see if the bolts were backing out?

No the only place on the timing cover that had any marks were where there is an indintion in the cover for some reason right where the can gear sits.

so now that it's all torn down the only damage in anywhere else i see is that gouge and it doesn't seem like it would effect anything and is very minor. so i think im still gonna run this block, just change the cam bearing in the front the others looks literally brand new. now im still planning on running a new cam the same size (tu0) and some ls7 lifters. does anyone have any thing else they'd recommend on this? replacing cam gear, cam bolts, oil pump, and timing cover also.

The Tooley lifters look like a good upgrade from the LS7's and they aren't much more money.
