I hate math, but you were on the right track OP. Always go to the closest preload.
typically people do in the middle range for preload (0.075).
(8.85 x .050") = .4425" and added that to the 6.8" length of the tool which gave me a 7.2425 length
7.2425 + 0.075 = 7.3175, since they don't have a 7.3175 pushrod go to the closest one in size so it would be a 7.325.
7.325 pushrod at 0.0825 is closer to the 0.075 preload than the 7.300 pushrod at .0575.
Atomic is correct you need to buy the 7.325.

Just so you feel better, I measured my engine tonight for pushrod length, and got measurements at zero lash of 7.200 on the intake and 7.18 on the exhaust. Even with 0.100" preload on the lifter which is on the high end, only puts me at 7.300". I spent probably an hour using a combination of pushrod length checker and my dial indicator and I am confident in my results. Granted my heads have been milled slightly, but I thought it was odd I need such a short rod as well.
