Default Yes, I know.. another cam post!

Alright, I've been on here for a while and haven't made many posts... spend most of my time reading and studying information.

I'm about to put a cam in my truck, and I need some help deciding what profile to go with.

The truck is.

1999 Silverado
Extended Cab Short Bed
Stock 4.8L (as far as I know)
Stock 4L60 (as far as I know)
Stock Intake
Stock Heads (as far as I know)
Shorties w/ 3" exhaust
Tru-Trac Rear
3.42's (getting ready to swap to some 3.73's)

Pretty much the truck is my daily driver.. and I might rarely take it to the track. Just a nice cruising vehicle for the weekends and dates with the girls.

What I'm looking for is a good cam where I don't have to change too much to the truck as it sits. I don't mind changing the springs/retainers and other needed mods to make the cam work. But I'd rather not go with a stall unless I can find a reasonable one for pretty cheap.

I'm wanting something that will not hurt my MPG's much.. I can take maybe a 2 MPG loss at most on the highway and I'd rather not loose any in town, its bad enough already. I'm wanting a good powerband in the 1700-6000 range maybe? I'm not looking for a really high revving cam just because it's not reasonable for my daily use. I just love having that tapped power there when you need it. I really miss it going from my Z28 to the truck. I'd really like to have a very sick lope at idle. Nothing better than sitting at stop lights and having people looking around for a muscle car just to be like, "Oh damn! Is that the truck?!?"

Any input would be much appreciated. If you need any more info than what I already posted I will do the best I can to supply it.

Thanks,
Matt

212/218 115lsa. You will want a tune after you install the cam to take full advantage of it, then you'll want to put on long tubes to free up the exhaust, then you will want to get a stall to get the engine in the butter zone, then you will want to drop in a 6.0 because the 4.8 isn't cutting it, then you will want to get a built tranny before yours takes a crap... but FIRST, you will want to use the search button and read all the past cam threads asking similar questions.

Comp 212 218 gets me 14.4's @ 96 mph, 290~ rwhp with intake/cat back/tune. Shouldn't be worried about lope, but I guess you could get it on a 112 lsa, mine lopes decently on a 114. It's a mild cam too so $50 LS6 springs and regular hardened push rods will last a while. I average 17 mpg mixed city & highway.

Yeah I've used search.. most everyone is like.. whats the biggest cam I can put in my 4.8L.
Well I'm not looking for the BIGGEST cam I can get.. just a good useful cam.

I have LT's sitting in my garage at the moment just haven't taken time to install.

There's also a LQ4 bottom end sitting on an engine stand in my bedroom that is also being worked on here and there. It's a never ending cycle.

I'll check more into that one... I'm expecting to do a tune soon anyways once I get everything installed with the LT's. Forgot to add that in. I'm not wanting a ridiculous lope that will barely hold... just something that has a nice chop to it. I think at 114 would probably do me fine also.

I just installed a comp 206/212 on a 112 in my 05' rcsb 4.8. With your goals in mind I think you would be really happy w/ this cam. Has just enough lope to know its there and has zero driveability issues. Truck runs ALOT harder all over the place, and didn't lose any power down low and pulls to 6200. Low-Midrange is where this cam makes power and works great w/ the stock convertor

same cam that i have...i really like it as well...114 has plenty of lope for me, and the cam performs very well at all RPMs IMO...

Either of those two cams would work very well. Also look for an LS6 cam since they work well in a 4.8L and can be had sometimes for less than $100.
