Yet another fun cam thread
So I'll make this one fairly quick and easy. In my 03 ECSB with a 4.8 I am looking at putting a TR220 cam. I will not be putting in a stall right now, and I realize I will loose some bottom end as a result. My question is, is this cam to large for the 4.8 to run without a stall? Thunder Racing says yes, everyone I talk to says no, so I want more opinions. If it is to big, what would a good cam for my truck be? I'm looking for something that has a nice lope, makes decent power, and that won't destroy my gas milage. Also I don't want to have to run a stall.

I know of some guys that ran a TR220 in a 4.8 RCSB and said it was alright on stock stall, but they eventually upgraded to a 3000 stall or so. Don't think you would like the loss of bottom end in your heavier truck.

why dont you put the money you are gonna spend camming your truck towards a nice stall...in your heavy ecsb youll like the stall a whole lot more than a cam. A circle d 3200 would be very nice and then later you can put a decent sized cam in it. Because once you cam it, youll want a stall...and then after you stall it the cam will be too small and youll spend double the money. Just my .02

I can do a cam in a weekend with no major problems, a stall would be a bit more tricky. Plus looking at the 212/218 it looks, and sounds, about like what I want in a cam. I don't want to put to much of a stall or a cam in it though being that its my DD.

I ran my puny 206/212 in my 5.3 on the factory converter for years and it was fine, but after I finally installed the Circle-D 258mm 3k converter I realized that I wished that I had done the converter first IMO, all of the GENIII/IV engines can benefit from a higher stalled converter even in stock form.
*Just a little side note: notice how many times that I referred to the torque converter as a "converter" as opposed to a "stall", which is not what it is, but what it does Sorry, that's just something that irks me...like calling "nitrous oxide" "nawz"
