My buddy here in town has one. He took a 4.0L SOHC V-6 out of an Explorer and swapped it in place of the 3.0L, and mated it up to the stock 5-speed tranny. It runs damn good too--high 14's with only one trip to the track. He has some other plans in store, can't wait until it's finished.

Just a lil history lesson.

93-2000 Ranger could have come equipped with the OHV 4.0L. The motor produced 160hp/225ft-lbs. The fastest stock is probably a low to mid 16.
In 2001, they ended offering OHV 4.0L and started selling them with SOHC 4.0Ls. These motors come with 207hp/235ft-lbs. The fastest stock is probably around a mid 15.

I bought mine in 2000 and once the new ones came out, knew I had to get that motor. Instead though, I went with the SOHC 4.0L from an Explorer. These came with 210hp/255ft-lbs, nearly what the old 302s came with stock. The motor fell right in with no modifications needed at all, unlike that of a 302 swap project.

The truck is pretty fun to drive. Not the quickest thing out there but it's fun.

Finding either 4.0L with a 5-speed mated up to it is much more rare than finding one with an auto. There's still plenty of each but the 5-speeds are a lot more rare.

And sorry for the misrepresentation there. I forgot that you swapped from the 4.0L OHV to the 4.0 SOHC.

does anyone know if a 2.5 liter with a 5-speed could get swapped for a 4.0, with same 5-speed. or would there need to be modifications.

my brother has a 94 splash with a 4.0 5 speed.

I built him a engine last yer for it 4.0 ohv

I tooksome 95 heads with the smaller combustion chambers and used them with the 94 pistons to get about 10:1 compresion, ported the heads, ported lower intake added headers, a maf and a chip. hes got a 4.10 posi. Right now best hes done is a 14.901 @ 92mph with a bit of wheel hop off the line.
From a 10 mph roll he beat my budies 92 5.0 with a few bolt on's. Cant keep the crappy trans togher very long though hes loking to swap in a t-5 soon.

I had a 4 liter/A4 back in '94. It went 10.4x in the 1/8th bone stock with 3.08 gears and after 3.73's, posi, exhaust, chip, and intake it went 10.20....woohoo!!! I probably woulda put a 5 liter in there but it caught on fire and burned to the ground before I got the chance.
