It might, but it might not like it too much.
When I had my 2.8 5 speed I pulled my brother's Yamaha R6 on a small trailer that had a huge solid loading ramp that folded up. That ramp was like a brick through the air, and my truck struggled. This rather large hill on the way back home caused the truck to ping so much the check engine light came on. I struggled to the top (barely) and continued on my way.

I've got between 17-20mpg with my ext cab s10 4.3 auto. Plus I drive mostly stop n go traffic for 20 miles one way to work. If it was all highway I've seen a best of 24mpg. The trick for my truck is to keep rpms under 2k and ur just fine. But like what others say the LS series have the best of both worlds. I personally would like to have a 5.3 and some boost. It could make the same or better on mpg and have an insane amount of power at the same time.
My mpgs are with no tune for the mods I have done as well. So I might be able to pick up 1-2 mpg with a tune

I have a 94 4.3L 5speed 4x4 2nd gen. The manual transmission sucks. I'd much rather get an auto. I get about 16-18 mpg in it so far but I may be able to squeeze some more out of it. Not much better than my full size truck though. But I like keeping miles off my silverado and its convenient to get in and go if i gotta pick something up. I will add that that 4x4 is great in such a little truck if you have snow.

Hey, I bought a 1992 S10 2.8 v6 5 speed today... Run good ac work. body straight, no rust. Im going drive for work. One day when I have plenty money to play around. I need search see how much swap for 5.3 like mounts, wiring?, header, radaitor, maybe 5 speed or auto. Which should I go for auto or 5 speed on 5.3 for s10. I think I should stick with auto.. I bought s10 for 1000
