Texas doesn't require registering of firearms. So as long as the buyer is in Texas, you could sell it and have a bill of sale as protection for the seller.
Tracing bullets is A LOT harder than in the movies. Your gun would have to get confiscated first of all, which would require him to do something stupid for that to be even close to happening. And he'd have to be connected to the past crime in some way, because there are only a few different rifle twists. It's not like a finger print, there are multiples of different riflings.

I realize it's hard to trace but it CAN happen. Criminals aren't exactly known for making the best decisions in the first place so doing something stupid is usually what they are good at.
Didn't know Texas doesn't require registration so that's cool. Should have known tho since it is TEXAS after all. I like to register mine regardless in case it gets stolen. Should It turn up some where and someone tries to register it would at least get flagged as stolen. Or at least in theory. Doesn't always happen in the real world.

If anything ever happens, the .gov is goin to the first person that it was sold to/has their name on the paperwork, If they have a bill of sale or such, they just keep goin down the line.

It takes NICS less than 1 mintue to do the check, the 10 day thing is just asinine.
