what should I use... kerosene?
a razor blade to get as much off as you can...then move to carb cleaner and a scotch brite pad. it makes easy work of it. the block MUST BE BARE to make sure the cometic .040's seal. dont leave ANYTHING or you might be pulling the heads again to do the gaskets. dont skimp out on the block prep with these gaskets factory guey gaskets can be thrown on just about anything haha. thats the one nice thing about the stockers.

put a light coat of spray on copper gasket on the gaskets for a little extra cheap insurance.

oh and wear leather gloves while cleaning the blolck...there are tons of shap edges to lose a finger on spray some wd40 in the piston holes if you havent already. i had some surface rust appear FAST cuz i tried to use penetrating lube instead of wd40. dummy me!

EFF your method!! This is what I did....

First took the big stuff off with a razor blade.
Then I sprayed some carb cleaner all over that bad boy and scrubbed the **** outta it with a scotch brite pad.
Then after that was all said and done I sprayed some WD-40 down in the piston holes and all over the pistons to protect from surface rust
