yep, i sprayed on a stock converter right off the line. if your going to try it make sure you have $500 for an engine laying around and a fire extinguisher.

I ran 13.9 with a CAI, hypercrap on the trans, lowered 4/6 on 20's, stock engine tune, stock converter, stock 3.42w/g80,80shot dry, full weight, 5.3. Trapped 98xxx. You should be able to get in that range. Altitude and weather make difference also. With lt's and a still stock tune I went 13.7. No track times since the tune, to be honest Im scared to run it with the stock 4l60 now. Don't wanna walk home!

i am not saying i blew up the motor. i did it hundreds of times. one time wacked it from an idle and had a backfire. the truck belched a little fire and blew up the intake tube.

i am trying to let you know it is risky to spray from that low but it works.

if you want till 3000rpm to spray that 4.8 your et is going to suck. to do it right a decent converter is all you really need.

while we're on the subject...what causes the backfires? is it just a lack of airflow coming through the engine at low rpms?

yeah i think that is what it is. too much fuel spraying and not enough air so it pools. if you give it a little brake stall everything should be ok but if you forget and just wack it from an idle things can get ugly.
