Default King Ranch 6.0

Guys,

A good friend of mine is having wayyy to many issues with his 06? King Ranch. It goes back and forth between egr issues and head gaskets (overheating). I don't know if there is a recall for these issues or if ford has addressed the problem but I do know that he has spent over 8k at his local dealer to remedy these issues and the same issues keep popping up right outside of their work warranty period CONVENIENTLY. If you guys have any info I would really appreciate it. Again I spend most of my time over at LS1tech and don't know crap about trucks or diesels.

Thanks!

depends what problems he is having. there is alot of problems with head gaskets, egr coolers and oil coolers and if the repair is done without replacing all of these parts repeat failure will happen. also any modifications done to the truck? possibly a turbo sticking causing an overboost condition that could cause repeat failures as well

Its lifted with 30" tires I believe but that's it besides ladder racks. I know he bought it new and his son did put a chip in it at one point. But he has since taken it out and the issues continue to happen.

Where can i get more information on these known issues. He also said something about the head bolts being too small and have been known to stretch. Is this true?

they are a torque to yield bolt so if you try to put to much boost in those cylinders they can stretch. thats why i asked about the mods. if you stud the heads and delete the egr they are very dependable but you can kiss your warranty good bye. otherwise run em stock and they don't have near as many problems as they used to. i would be interested to see what kind of repairs were done

all is good information, the 6.0 is potentially a great motor if your building it correctly. The 6.0 only has 4 studs per cylinder instead of the normal 6 on other motors such as the 7.3, 5.9, 6.6 and newer 6.4 and 6.7 for ford. So the heads can float easier than normal if you throw a chip on it. Do head studs, EGR delete and youve got yourself a stout dependable motor. On top of that I would go with the aftermarket oil filter since your oil goes through your injectors and those are $$$ as well.

Even stock motors have these issues your friend is having

Those problems have been the bain of 6.0L owners since they came out. I would do an EGR delete asap, and also the headstuds that others have suggested. Here, look up some videos on Youtube by "powerstrokehelp" he does a very good job of explaining the reason why everybody is wary of the 6.0 and the problems it has caused Ford.

6.0L 1 of 2

6.0L 2 of 2

Yep my buddy had the SCT on his 6.0. He had that truck in the shop 4 times within 2 months. The high pressure oil pump went out, seal on the turbo, blew a headgasket and then i can't remember but something with the fuel system got messed up. So now hes driving a 07 5.9 cummins with straight pipe and smarty and loves it.

install an EGR delete kit (sinisterdiesel.com $400+shipping) and a set of ARP head studs(sinisterdiesel.com $650+shipping) and that'll correct those two problems. it'll probably cost you some were in the neighborhood of 3-5k to have a shop install these parts. don't count on ford doing it for you though. i'd look for a good diesel shop.

also if you live in an area were you have to do emissions testing, then have a 03 6.0L EGR cooler installed. NOTE: it has to be an 03 because in 04 the changed the cooler design from a round tube to a square tube. the 03 flows, cools better than the 04+ coolers. it's still going to go out but not as often.

the turbos have a problem with surging really bad as well. don't remember why of the top of my head. they also have a habit at going really quick as well. even on stock motors. the earlier 6.0(03-04) had injector issues really bad. there was a recall on that. it involved reflashing the the ECU. supposedly they fixed it for the 05+.

check out powerstroke.org for some more info on the 6.0l

seems like some 6.0s are flawless from the factory and run like a champ, but others are just a complete disaster.
