Default 1970 Jeep Gladiator 5.3/4l65e S475

Hello everyone. I guess this thread is as good of a place for an introduction thread as anywhere else. I'll start this off like an AA meeting. My name is Erik, and I have lsx and boost problems. I bought my GTO back in 2007, twin turbo'd it a few years ago, and haven't looked back. Then came the Z06. Now, after having the Gladiator my whole life and the 355 in it for about 6 years, it's time for a turbo lsx in it. Hope you all enjoy the thread. I'll keep it going as the build progresses.

Well... here we go. Taking out the heads/cam 355sbc and replacing it with a 5.3 out of a 106k mile '01 Silverado. It's an iron block, aluminum heads (862 casting) motor with a drive by cable throttle body. Planning on stock bottom end, cam, new head gaskets, arp head studs, and an S475. I have a 4l65e out of hummer that i'll use instead of the 4l60e that originally came behind the motor. I'm planning on 700+hp in a 4wd truck so I figured the 4l65 will be more up to the task than the 60. No interest in swapping to an 80 because the driveline will all have to be changed.

I bought a couple cheap harbor freight engine stands and started stripping down the motor. This wiring harness is a disaster... I need to cut out a lot of things that I don't need anymore like the egr, rear 02's, ect as well as extend a bunch of it to make the install clean.

Here's the truck that's getting the swap.

And here's the beautiful motor that's coming out. It's kind of a shame, but i'm power hungry. So bring on the turbo 5.3.

Bought a Millermatic 211 Mig welder. Pretty awesome little machine, if I must say so myself. So I got a piece of steel bent up and made a frame out of box tubing. Welded it all together to build my welding station. Got a nice chop saw, new grinder, and big vice to mount to the bench. I'll probably make some sort of slide out tray for the bench grinder/wire wheel.

Here's candidate for torture. 2001 5.3 with 106k miles. Picked it out of the truck and put in on a cheap harbor freight engine stand. I opted for the heavier duty one. Best 60 bucks ever spent haha. I don't think I could build one myself for that cheap.

Here's the motor a little cleaned up. Damn thing was filthy. I still have a lot of cleaning and painting to do. I'm using an black Pro Flo intake manifold, Katech rod bolts, and an ls2 timing set. Still need to get ls9 gaskets, arp head studs, and the cam package.

Then I practiced welding some exhaust tubing one tack at a time. This was my first try. I don't think it came out too bad considering I had never welded exhaust before, mostly just steel plate. I played with some settings on the welder and they've gotten neater, but I don't have any pictures taken.

The hot side is going to be built out of Pacesetter truck short tube headers, 2.5" J bends, V bands, 44mm waste gate, and a T6 flange.

Engine mounts are the billet aluminum adapters from Holley, "stock location." The driveline should stay in the exact same location that its in now by replacing the 700r4 with the 4l65e and using SBC to LSx "stock location" plates.

Here's the poor truck that had no idea what it was in for... last time it ran was backing it onto the lift

It's almost a shame to pull such a pretty motor out...

I love that!!! But dont expect a 60E to hold up to 700+ hp in a 4wd..

I'm hoping the 65e will with the 5 pinion planetaries. I'm only going to make 10psi on wastegate, so it 'should' be ok by only turning it up every once in a while. It won't be a stock trans either... Still not as beefy as the 80e though no matter how I look at it

They say the first step to solving a problem is admitting you have one in the first place... We're just not ready for that.

Got the S475 in the mail... what a huge bitch LOL. I'm nervous about finding room for it, but i'm sure i'll manage. It should look pretty dominant in the engine bay. I sand blasted the motor and painted it Chevy orange like the old motor. Valve covers are high temp wrinkle black, but they're going to get black covers over them to hide the coil packs anyway. They'll match the black Edelbrock Pro Flo intake manifold.

My original plan was to order the Speed Inc TU1 cam, but I'm going to go a little bigger. I just ordered the TU1.5.

TU1 is 225/225 581/581 113 lsa
TU1.5 is 228/228 571/571 112 lsa.

It should be a little choppier, pull a little harder up top, and with the slightly lower lift be a little less harsh on valve springs with high boost. Next I have to rework and pretty up the harness and order HP Tuners Pro.

That's all I've got for now.
